11. Civics

Civics is the Study of the Rights and Duties of Citizenship

The future of politics and civics lies in the quality of civics education today, unfortunately studies show that Universities across the nation are failing to provide adequate civics education. When it comes to American History courses the focus is on the founding to 1877 and 1877-present day. However politics just isn't being taught, this could be due to personal political identity of professors and focus on our nations shortcomings rather than our triumphs.

“This report spotlights the stark and worrisome contrast between the topics most civically involved Americans would expect in an introductory survey course on American history and what many professors have decided to teach instead,” - Center for American Institutions Director Donald Critchlow

This is something we all should be concerned with because it encourages the erosion of civic culture and discourages good citizenship.

One state, Arizona, requires all high school students to pass a civics test to graduate. This law was passed by the Legislature in 2015 and signed into law by former Gov. Doug Ducey, marking it the first bill of his administration and making Arizona the first state to adopt such a law.

To encourage and promote civic education in middle school students there is an annual competition, The National Civics Bee that encourages students to engage in civic education and contribute to their communities.
