A Listening Post is where you get your information from in your Community For me my listening posts include going to church and talking on the phone with my sisters and brother who are also students, my youngest sister attends high school, my other sister attends Texas Women's College and my brother attends University of Houston.  At church we often have announcements that include local church events as well as community events. We came up with an idea to creat...

Columbia County Inmate Roster  Access to Public Records is important to stay informed about your community. I choose to look into the current inmate roster in Columbia County, although I live in Lafayette County I spend a lot of time in Columbia County so I thought this would be just as relevant to me.  Currently there are 86 inmates on the Columbia County Roster and on the Columbia County Sheriff website  you can search by Name, Date, Current, Released and also newest to oldest or oldest to newest.  Included in the view of each inmate are the Name of the inmate, booking number and date, charges and bond amount. For most of them they have included a mugshot image.  In the month of October there were 13 inmates booked with charges ranging from, domestic battery, burglary, resisting arrest, violation of probation, shoplifting and more.  To keep our community safe I appreciate full disclosure of the crimes being committed locally and public records...

Biden Administration aims to combat 'Anti Semitism' on College Campuses  Since the start of the 'Isreal-Hamas' war started in early October there has been an alarming increase in antisemitic incidents across college campuses across the United States. The departments of Justice and Homeland Security are working with campus law enforcement to monitor online hate speech and will provide federal resources to schools.  Leading Jewish organizations are concerned with the antisemitic and hateful rhetoric that has been revealed during this time. The Education Department is conducting visits across the U.S. to address this issue.  “These grotesque sentiments and actions shock the conscience and turn the stomach. They also recall our commitment that can’t be forgotten: ‘never again," White House spokesman Andrew Bates said.  Dozens of new federal government actions have been introduced by the Biden administration, to increase awareness and protect Jewish communities....

Liberty University Creates Unsafe Environment for Students The Washington Post , Oct. 2023 Liberty University a private Christian school in Lynchburg, Virginia has hidden, underreported and destroyed evidence of campus crimes. The Department of Education launched a investigation into the school after receiving a complaint in May 2021. The review included data from 2016 to 2022. In response to the Department of Education findings being released, a representative of Liberty says “Liberty University prioritizes the safety and security of every student without exception. Because the Washington Post has made claims based on some information that is false, is not final, and is not public, the University will not comment specifically on any questions posed by the Washington Post at this time.” However this is not the case, the school has failed to make a safe environment for its 90,000 students. Some of the crimes that were not reported include sexual assaults, bomb threats, and even se...

The Arkansas Lithium Boom! Standard Lithium purchases 118 acres in Lafayette County, this will be the future site of a lithium extraction plant in Arkansas. This is the perfect place for this warehouse, due to massive lithium deposits in Southern Arkansas. Lithium is used for batteries and can be used for renewable energy in cars and technology.  Standard Lithium plans to begin construction in 2025 and production is to begin in 2027. This billion dollar industry will impact this southwest Arkansas area positively especially since the oil industry has died down in the area.  This is exciting news for many in Lafayette and Columbia County because this will bring jobs, money, and new opportunities for community growth.  Read More at KATV
